Best Modern Beethoven Sonatas?

"David Allen Wehr's traversal of the 32 Beethoven Sonatas is extraordinary. Powerful when needed, but lyrical in the slower passages, with a total grasp on the structure of these magnificant masterpieces (in my view all 30 of the sonatas Beethoven approved for publication--omitting the little Op.49 sonatas he never authorized--are genuine masterpieces). Wehr has a wonderful technique, fully up to the demands of Beethoven. Recorded on a Yamaha, the engineering is just superb, with wonderful presence and clarity in all registers. Connoisseur Society has been producing some of the best sounding piano recordings for at least four decades, going back to the great Ivan Moravec recordings from the 60's. I think this set offers the best modern recording of the Beethoven sonatas I have heard. I highly recommend all four double CD volumes of the complete set. Simply magnificant! Note all four volumes are available directly from CS, or ArkivMusic."
