David Bowie At His Best
Jamie Jacobs | Australia | 02/24/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"David Bowie and Brian Eno go are at their best on this album. 'DAVID BOWIE-1.OUTSIDE' is a strange voyage into the lives of several shady characters and the 1st track 'Leon Takes Us Outside' establishes this. It sounds as if there is a detective(Nathan Adler) pacing back and forth in a large empty corridor muttering random dates and events as if he is trying to figure out something. Drifting in the background are echoing musical segments that fade in and out creating an eerie feel.It makes the audience of the album wonder what's happening or what is about to happen.

Soon the second track 'Outside' kicks in and grabs you by the ears as the quiet eerie sound fades out and a louder faster piece occurs. It's now the start of the story. The detective at the start has taken the audience back to where it all began. Once the music becomes serious again a menacing voice shifts in.

It is BOWIE sounding somewhat evil but still his cool self. "Now, not tomorrow!" he chants in character-An Outsider. He is talking to Baby Grace, another character on the album."They'll stand by you now,not tomorrow" he continues. Is someone going to kill Baby grace?

Song 3 steps in and this is the most nightmarish track on the album. 'The Hearts Filthy Lesson' brings the audience a loop of violent guitar and drum sounds along with a horror film piece of piano. Something terrible has happened amongst the characters mentioned in this song.Something disturbing.

What's happening? What's next? You will find out during the rest of the masterpiece album OUTSIDE.

I highly recommend this album because of it's musical content. There is so much to listen out for including some noises you won't identify the first time you listen to the album. There is a mixture of fast and slow songs and a choice of rough or peaceful. I must warn that the album should be listened to as a whole and not as a bunch of singles as there is a narrative throughout it. At first the album may appear strange but give it a couple of plays and you'll be hooked.

For people who appreciate great music OUTSIDE will bring much delight.

It is evident that Bowie is the best musician of all time!"
