CD Reviews

I can't say I wasn't warned
J. Brady | PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC United States | 12/15/2004
(1 out of 5 stars)

"I am a big fan of Bowie, and a big fan of electronic and dance music. But these remixes are just dreadful. I read a mixed review of this cd somewhere, but bought it anyway. WOW. How dumb was that? These remixes are mind numbing, boring and repetitive. Some are completely unrecognizable, taking the hooks and lyrics we know and love, removing them and putting in their place horribly dated synth effects and drum tracks. My one and only question: Did David Bowie hear these remixes before allowing this release? If so, what was he thinking???"
Surprisingly good

"The thought of remixing David Bowie's music may seem sacrilegious to some but this remix album is surprisingly good and the remixes are tasteful and consistent, a rarity for many remix albums.Scumfrog's remix of "Loving The Alien" retains the chill of the original while the David Guetta remix of "Heroes" captures the mesmerizing sweep of Bowie's classic song. The Danny S remix of "Magic Dance" is appropriately upbeat and bouncy and an added treat is the Club Bolly version of "Let's Dance" which is an excellent overhaul of the funk/pop hit. I am a fan of Bowie's original material but these remixes are worth hearing and definitely recommended for fans of Bowie's more dance-oriented material."
Mixed mixes

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Always nice to hear great classics in new formats, but the results here are mixed. A few of these mixes have masterfully managed to keep the qualities of the original while really also adding something new and exciting (The Scumfrog's mix of "Loving the Alien", Solaris' "Shout" which is a mix of "Fashion", and the fantastic Club Bolly Mix of "Let's Dance"). Others are truly dull and does not work at all outside a club setting. Without these dull tracks which should have remained rare and unreleased this would clearly have been a 5 star album. There are some very good Bowie-mixes out there that would have deserved their place here (such as the homeofmusic mix of "Let's Dance" and the Deepskys Space Cowboy Vocal Remix version of "I Took A Trip On A Gemini Spaceship"). Still, the good stuff is really good and enough to make this a great buy!"
