CD Reviews

I know it should be all about the MUSIC, but...

"The remastering here is biased to the treble, and overall is rather cool and lean sounding. I know part of this is a "Bowie Sound" thing, but really...

I am just saying, if you have some audiophilic leanings, this will give you a headache, as, I am told, will the other Virgin re-issues.

Even some of the LP versions were recorded this way, so no relief there...

I use my disc to keep my mug off the coffee table."

"It's been 30 years, but Bowie's SCARY MONSTERS still sounds modern, with complex, propulsive, interesting, arrangements, and well-craft, surprisingly personal songs with some compelling vocal performances. It does not sound like a product of 1980, 1990, 2000, or 1970, for that matter. The most famous tracks here are "Ashes to Ashes" and "Fashion", but equally good material like "Teenage Wildlife" and "Because You're Young" are just waiting to rediscovered. It's become cliche to call this Bowie's last great album, and it's true that he's recorded quite a few great albums since SCARY MONSTERS - like the BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA soundtrack and REALITY, for example - but part of the reason SCARY MONSTERS is often called the "last great album" is because it set the bar so high.

(If you can find it, the 1992 Rykodisc CD reissue of this album is preferred as it includes four bonus tracks, including a stark reworking of "Space Oddity" from 1979 that ties-in well with "Ashes to Ashes")."
