Synopsis

Product Description
David Griers accolades include three-time Guitar Player of the Year (International Bluegrass Music Assn.), one of Acoustic Guitar Magazines Artists of the Decade (2000) and performances on four Grammy Award-winning albums. Evocative presents 10 original tunes, conjuring yet another musical milestone for an artist who constantly re-invents himself, always keeping one step ahead of expectations. Grier, legendary in Bluegrass and acoustic music circles, hasnt left those roots behind. Instead, he has creatively expanded his musical territory. Evocative is full of pleasant surprises. These are smooth and melodic tracks from a virtuoso who doesnt make it his mission to show off or prove his technical ability. Grier is immensely capable as a musician but the bottom line is David makes music that is enjoyable, covering a wide spectrum of tonal colors and musical landscapes. In his mastery of tone, in his precision picking and in the way he takes melodies apart and puts them back together, Grier nods to Norman Blake, whereas the rich and varied dynamics he brings to his interactions with other instruments recall the approach of Joe Pass. When he wails on electric guitar you might even think of a picker named Duane Allman.

CD Reviews

Different?
Quinton Oliver King | Bozeman, MT United States | 03/11/2010
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Well, first I'm a dedicated Grier fan and so I admit a certain degree of bias here. While the tunes themselves might not be that "different" given Grier's playing has always been diverse, this CD is certainly different than previous CDs. The album is generally slower and more melodic rather than the aggressive flatpicking tunes that have drawn so many guitarists to Grier. As any experienced acoustic guitar player knows, it's much harder to play slow than fast, simpler than complicated and still keep it interesting (for example, Dave Rawlings w/ Gillian Welch). Grier does this with Evocative and he does it very well. Like much of Grier's work, it takes a few focused tries for the real subtleties to emerge, like staring cross-eyed at those computer generated 3-D pictures. So while I believe this album is "different", it's definitely a good "different"."
