Immersed in Anglo/Celtic/North American song traditions, Rivers, Kings and Curses is a highly personal album by a master song poet. The musical arrangements show off DNL's fine command of finger-style guitar and boast guest musicians as diverse as Celtic music legend, Robin Williamson and famed blues pianist, Nat Dove. Rich melodies abound; half are traditional and half are Lloyd s own. From the Thames to the mighty Columbia to the River of Blood of the antique Scottish ballads, a third of the songs concern rivers. Another third are inhabited by kings as strange as the King of the Deep Dark Well and as familiar as King Jesus. As for the curses, none are undeserved or malicious; they each contain an escape clause.
