"While I'm only giving this CD one start, I find myself agreeing with the folks who reacted negatively to the reviews that called this album pathetic, unlistenable, etc. I deeply respect Sylvian as an artist and understand that sometimes what he chooses to compose or perform may not work for me. This is one of those cases. But that he grows, changes, develops, and explores is what makes him a great artist in my view and I appreciate the journey even if i don't always connect with the outcome.
If musicians did the same thing over and over we wouldn't have gotten Miles Davis' jazz/rock explorations, Talk Talk's evolution to what some call post-classical, or even Sylvian change from the "Japan days" to Nine Horses.
I hope that his next work is something I can connect to or learn to appreciate (because that is sometimes what it takes) but if not I'll continue to applaud his efforts to grow & explore even if it doesn't appeal to me.
So listen to the samples, go to his website and other links and judge for yourself. If you really hate minimalist music or will only listen/buy stuff that sounds like everything the artist has done previously, than this is definitely not for you. But if you're willing to open up a bit this might work for you even if it doesn't work for me.
