One of the better efforts
CD Maniac | Nashville, TN | 10/25/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the second fully-orchestrated set of the Debussy's complete 24 preludes (originally written for piano). Brewaeys followed Hans Henkemans' full set, and was in turn followed by Colin Matthews.

None of them does them all well, but Brewaeys gets a good majority of them just right. He is most successful with the most complex of the Preludes, that benefit from his colorful complex scoring. Just listening to his version of "Fireworks" takes your breath away--a very impressive orchestration of this movement, indeed. Other such movements work as well: La Tierces Alternees, Ondine, Les Fees Sont D'Exquises Danseuses.

Less successful are the simplest of Debussy's movements, which Brewaeys tends to over-score, weighing them down into something that they were not intended to be. In general, the book 2 preludes are much better than those in Book 1.

Still, a very worthy addition to the orchestral repertoire, as more of Debussy's piano music deserves to be heard with orchestra."
