Auspicious start of a series

"I really like this record. Sure, you can get more stellar performances from the likes of Gieseking, Michelangeli or Richter. If, however, you just want to relax and enjoy this lovely music ravishingly played, I cannot recommend Noriko Ogawa too highly. Slightly more relaxed in her tempi, she nonetheless makes this music shimmer and glow. The recording (in Stockholm) is way better than anything you'll find for those past masters, allowing you to really lose yourself in Debussy's sound scape. Her Steinway too is voiced to perfection, contributing to a performance that allows you to forget about composer, pianist and instrument and just immerse yourself in the music.Being volume one of a series, inevitably there is included a weak piece or two. Here, the 1894 set of Images isn't up to the standard of Debussy's mature masterpieces. Nonetheless, a generous program of essential repertoire lovingly performed. This will be the series to beat. I can hardly wait for the preludes."
