Deep Forest Sound - Not a Deep Forest Concept

"Le Prince du Pacifique is an international film set in the Pacific Islands (surprise!) for which Deep Forest produced the soundtrack. For that reason, Pacifique is a very different breed of Deep Forest album. Unfortunately, in terms of composition and overall sound, it is only middling at best.According to interviews with DF after the release of Comparsa, Asia would be their next stop on their grand world tour of music. For Pacifique, they've collected percussion samples and vocals from Samoan and other island cultures. The raw components are fairly good. The sampled voices on "Pacifique" form a nice melodic and rhythmic counterpoint to underlying percussion. La Legende (Part 2) provides similarly well blended vocals with a solid, if unextraordinary, rhythm and melodic line. And Huaine Reggae is a nice upbeat piece to close the album.Unlike other albums, Pacifique seems particularly flat. Again, a soundtrack has to have a certain regularity to it; but there is regularity to a fault. In general, the songs are so bland that you'll quickly skip over them. The lack of any cross cultural blend plays into this. There's no Africa meets Cuba meets Inuit on this soundtrack. And Deep Forest seems somewhat lost on innovating when they don't play outside culturally boundary within one major thing.I supremely hope this isn't an indication of future Deep Forest output. Especially for the price of an import, I would strong steer away from this (unless you're a collector), and wait for a (hopefully) brand new album."

An album, rather than a soundtrack!

"Although this is a soundtrack, it could easily be considered a new album from the magicians of new age,that is Deep Forest! It is an essential CD not only for fans, but for anyone who enjoys the music Deep Forest have mastered, traditional chants combined with modern rhytms. It is so atmospheric(however it must be said that it does not match Boheme)and at times very melancholic. Pacifique, only one of the numerous gems on the CD,brings to memory one of Vangelis earlier works, Himalaya.It really delivers an excellent mixture of instrumentation, traditional and modern,though the modern one takes over most of the time.And that's when the Haiti chants come in and everything is really wonderful...I cannot actually choose one piece as i like most of them the same..."

"It's not really fair to compare this CD to other Deep Forest releases, as it is a soundtrack to a Movie and not a "real" Deep Forest CD. Having said that it's a little bit disappointing in it's content and is more electronic than Deep Forest have been of late. But wait, It's only disappointing because it isn't up the amazingly brilliant Standards of "Boheme" and "Made In Japan". If I didn't have those to compare it to, I'd think it was a super CD. If you're new to Deep Forest and you liked the music from the movie "Le Prince du Pacifique" then this is the one to buy. Then when you're hooked be amazed by checking out their other CD's. There are a couple of Gems on Pacifique,including the title track and Ouverture huahiné. Overall this CD is a must for fans."
