CD Reviews

Ever Fresh
Susan Budig | Minneapolis, MN United States | 10/07/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"The reviewer before me missed Francoise Schaubert's name, listed in the liner notes. He also missed appreciating the sound like strings-on-a-fiddle that Schaubert and M. Doucet produced as they sang together. I guess I'm partial to Michael's voice, though. I agree that he plays his violin with greater command than his voice, but he's a wonderful Cajun singer.

I completely enjoyed this album. Years ago I'd heard "Hommage aux Freres Balfa" and was captivated by it. Finally snagging this CD with that delicious song made my day. But what really turned me on was a suprise duet that I'd never heard before: "Les Barres de la Prison." Thing is, it's so jazzed up, it doesn't sound that Cajun. I still love it.

The album contains many traditional numbers and the band has a lot of fun performing them. It's refreshing to hear a female voice (Francoise) on many of the tracks. This is my 17th BeauSoleil album and I'm still hearing new tunes full of hot sauce and energy."
Often Overlooked

"This was the first cajun album I bought, after hearing "Zydeco Gris-Gris" featured in some 80's movie, I think it was "She's Having a Baby". There is a nice mix of originals as well as cajun standards. What sets this album apart from other Beausoleil/Doucet releases is the featured female vocalist who is inexplicably not credited in the liner notes! Doucet's vocals take a back seat (no big loss, his strength is in his violin, not his voice)."
