Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
McCoury grabs songs from a variety of sources and molds them all into traditional-bluegrass shape. Assisted by his sons Rob (banjo) and Ronnie (mandolin), the elder McCoury moves from Lefty Frizzell and Willie Nelson to Bill Monroe and 1930s bluesman Leroy Carr. Tight group harmonies and ensemble picking form the foundation while McCoury's wailing voice combines the high lonesome sound of mountain music with the inflections of a blues singer. The instrumental "Quicksburg Rondezvous" displays the band's hot-picking prowess while the gospel "I Know His Voice" features sensitive support from Ronnie's mandolin and aching vocals from his father. --Marc Greilsamer

CD Reviews

Powerful Bluegrass!
07/09/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Del McCoury band is the finest band in the oldtime bluegrass tradition on the market today. This album showcases, as usual, awesome instrumentals and fine covers by Del and his two sons. Ronnie is perhaps the best bluegrass mandolin player in the business and this is the album where he really comes into the forefront of the bands "modern oldtime" sound."
Oh what an unique voice that Del McCoury has and what a cd

"Anyone who has ever listened to Del McCoury will never forget that voice. The band plays some of the bluest of blues songs that are soul stirring and gut wrenching. With every pick, strum, pluck, or pull, the music is awesome. This is one of the best rainy day and lonesome bluegrass cds I've ever listened to. This is a must for bluegrass lovers."
On par with cold hard facts
