CD Reviews

Soulful blend of rock, blues, and gospel.

"I picked this album out of a bargain bin back in 1974, and it quickly began to get regular play on the turntable at our college apt. It caught my eye because of the "Friends" listed as playing on the album. They were some of my favorite musicians; Duane Allman, Dave Mason, Joe Cocker, and Leon Russell. Also present were the "Dominoes", the rhythm section from Clapton's Fillmore album, among others. Motel Shot contains a nice mix of original and traditional songs. Highlights are blues great Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen", and Delaney Bramlett's "Sing My Way Home", and his "Never Ending Song of Love", which received some radio play. Other standout numbers include "Long Road Ahead", "Lonesome And A Long Way From Home", and "Going Down The Road Feeling Bad". The recording has an informal, "in your living room", kind of feel to it. Almost like a bootleg, but with better sound. This is a fine example of the fun these great artists were having exploring other musical genres together. It's great that we can listen in, and share a little of the fun with them."
