"So what if you are related to one of the Allman Brothers ? If you have read the book "Midnight Riders" by Scott Freeman about the Allman Brothers, you'll find how many siblings they all have begetted. Plus also the number of players who had joined and became associated with the Allmans. Offhand I can think of Warren Haynes, Dangerous Dan, members of Gregg Allman's band, members of Dickie Betts Band, Sea Level, Gregg Allman's sons and even Rees Wynan. But Derek Trucks is truely a direct decendant. He has Duane Allman's fat humbucker sliding tone and attack but laced in Dickie Bett's jazz leanings. He has infact taken song moulds like "In memory of Elizabeth Reed", "Hot 'Lanta", "Stormy Monday" and "Whipping Post" further into a jazzier environment. What you have here is not a Southern Rock band of the '70's in the vein of '38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd or even the Charlie Daniels Band. The Derek Trucks Band is unique in the sense they are more of a jazz outfit but playing with the feel and energy of the Southern Rebel tradition. The album can do with a few more vocal tracks as the instrumentals ultimately wears thin as Derek is the only soloist able to capture the listener. Perhaps their new album will offer more variety. Buy this album and begin collecting thier works as I can see better and greater things to come from Derek and the boys."

"This cd is the best cd I own. When I listen to it, its like I feel the way he does. Some of the songs are just so powerful and have so much feeling, he's amazing. After meeting Derek I have such a great appreciation for him and his music. If you don't have this cd or Out of the Madness you really are missing out!"
Give him 10 years and he will be the best there is

"I've been following this guy since he was 12, doing almost perfect Duane in little bars in Florida. This album was made when he was 18! Imagine a Southern slide guitar player tackling Coltrane at 18! The guy's heart is in the right place and his playing... well, not only does he have chops, he has a style all his own.The band is hot, the guitar player even hotter. If he can keep it together and not attempt to assimilate everything, keep his own style, he will be awesome. Hell, he already is.All the above not withstanding, here is very modest and restrained playing for a kid prodigy.Imagine Coltrane/Allman Bros. This is an excellent CD."
Great Jazz!!!

"Personally, I like this album better than "Out of the Madness" (which is hard to beat). Derek and the rest of the band show their true talent, JAZZ! These guys can play! Oh yeah, and Derek was only 16 years old when they recorded this. Imaging what he'll be like in 10 years. Keep on Rockin'!!!!"
Great jamming and jazzy tunes

"Derek Trucks 1st CD is a little more jazzy than some later efforts. Coltrane and Miles Davis tunes are covered here along with original material. I bought this CD at a concert where Derek was the opening act for Gregg Allman. Derek played his set and guested on a few Gregg Allman songs. He wasn't yet a member of the Allman Brothers Band but was in the loop though.
Sorry to see that this is out of print as it is well worth hearing and owning."
