"You can always count on Deuter for crisp production values,
total emotional/intuitive commitment to the performances and
a lush, evocative feel that is as luscious as a perfectly ripe mango,
fragrant as a rose in full bloom and pristine as a lily pad. Wow.
This album is in Deuter's more western classical mode, the
more traditional sound that made him world-famous. While not
breaking any new ground, it does take its place alongside the
pantheon of his main modality musics including the recent
2003 releases, "Sea & Silence" and "Earth Blue." I distinguish
these albums from his releases which tend to have more
of an explicit influence from eastern Asian classical musics, which
I prefer: his meditative and healing musics. Last year's "Spiritual
Healing" is one of my most loved Deuter releases of all time.
"Atmospheres" centers on delicate impressionistic piano
supported by gentle, ethereal string synthesis. This is
introspective music appropriate for the spa, massage,
drinking tea, reading, quiet mornings filled with Light.
With ten songs in little more than an hour, the average
length is around six minutes and thus not particularly
suited to meditation or imaginal voyages. This is, rather,
music for times of peace and tranquility, where one may
reflect on life or enjoy intimate conversation. I give it
four stars, reserving the fifth for when he really
outdoes himself.
I always keep up with Deuter because when he gets
it right, it is nearly perfect. This album, while not in
my preferred style and not terribly original, is a very
enjoyable paradisal environment and the relaxation
response my body had to it was near immediate and
quite profound. I should point out that Deuter stands
out as one of the early progenitors of what would
come to be called "New Age Music" along with other highly
notable composers like the supreme angelic sounds artist, Iasos,
and the pioneer of scientific healing music, Stephen Halpern.
Like either of these other artists, when you put their music on,
it will sound like "New Age Music" because they are IN FACT
"New Age Music" because they are the ones who developed
what came to be known as "New Age Music." My body convinced
my mind that i like it.
This album is certainly NOT a 2&1/2. a 3 or 3&1/2 is
arguable, but trust me it is not under 3"

"I own well over 300 New Age CD's and Deuter's 'Atmospheres' is easily in the handful at the top! Even among deuter's other CD's that I have sampled, this one is far and away his best. The seemless blend of the nature sounds (recorded live by Deuter himself) with the sparse instrumentation create a tranquil world that entrances you. The 10 tracks (simply numbered in various languages) have this curious property of flowing yet leading you nowhere. No rifts, no refrains, no memorable passages, yet each piece has it's own identity and "atmosphere". Like water flowing, it neither calls attention to itself, nor does it stagnate. This CD reached to my core in a way New Age first did over 20 years ago. I had never bought another copy of a CD I own to gift to someone else. This CD I bought 2 more as gifts. If you want a relaxing CD that you will reach for again & again, you owe it to yourself to check this CD out!"
