Dick Hyman is the rarest of repertory artists, combining exceptional technique and musical taste with a keen sensitivity to the nuances of the music he's playing. Rather than simply try to re-create the music, Hyman immerses himself in it to such a degree that it becomes his own. That involvement is apparent here, in this highly personal homage to Fats Waller, who was both a superb songwriter and a great jazz pianist. Hyman provides warmly lyrical versions of the best-known songs, like "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose," and virtuosic treatments of the pieces on which Waller developed the art of stride, imbuing them all with his own distinct personality. Like all of Hyman's Reference recordings, this is superbly recorded, with brilliant fidelity and presence. --Stuart Broomer

An exellent tribute to Fats Waller...

"If only Fats Waller were still around to hear this loving tribute, he would truly be moved... Here Dick Hyman pays tribute to possibly the greatest stride pianist that ever lived Thomas "Fats" Waller, Hyman never copies Fats' style, Hyman makes the music his own, yet Fats' presents is definately here on this highly enjoyable session. This(& perhaphs Hyman's tribute to Duke Ellington) is his finest session, and you can definately say that Hyman is the Fats Waller of today. This CD should be aquired by all serious jazz fans."
One never know, do one....

"That is a famous quote of Fats Waller. Though I have no idea what he meant by it, it's what he might well have said had he ever heard his music sound this good. Fats ate everything, drank everything, smoked everything, and died young. While he lived, he was the greatest composer, and performer, of the genre we call "stride" that ever lived. It takes a lot to do Fats justice, but this remarkable album accomplishes it.

Here we have the greatest living jazz pianist, the finest recording engineer that has ever lived, and the music of a genius, all combining to create a masterpiece. Get this, and you'll be entranced and amazed. Five stars aren't nearly enough."
Wonderful!

"Best Fats Waller album I ever bought, better than Waller himself. Sheer magic. Try also his Scott Joplin."
