Miraculous transfer of a classic

"This is one of the best transfers I have ever heard for a pre-World War II recording. If there is such a thing as a "demonstration" transfer for such old recordings, this is it. The performance inevitably reflects Sir Thomas Beecham's masterly way with the music. Indeed it is required listening for that reason alone. The singers are excellent and vividly caught by the microphones. Warmth and humanity shine through, and isn't this what Zauberflote is all about? I like Karajan's 1951 EMI recording for the better sound quality and some of the singing, but there is a magic to this 1938 recording that makes it a desert island choice for me, particularly in this splendid transfer."
