Dillard &Clarks Swan Song
Wayne Klein | 12/13/2003
(3 out of 5 stars)

"The second and final Dillard and Clark lp is a comedown from there debut but still has it's moments.Bernie Leadon moved over to labelmates The Flying Burrito Bros,as did drummer Mike Clark and bluegrass fiddle champion Byron Berline and vocalist Donna Washburn joined Dillard and Clark on this album. The result is a more electric c&w with frequent pedal steel by Burrito Sneaky Pete, and more covers of c&w standards along with a great version of The Beatles Dont Let Me Down.Clark duets with Donna Washburn on Rocky Top and the Everly Bros. So Sad in a style not unlike Gram Parsons and Emmy Lou Harris. No Longer A Sweetheart Of Mine and Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms are fine examples of pure bluegrass showcasing the talents of Doug Dillard and Byron Berline. All in All a decent album it just doesn't live up to The Fantastric Expedition Of Dillard & Clark."
Dillard and Clark swansong

"The second and last Dillard and Clark album featured a shift in the band. Gone were Bernie Leadon(who sang harmony vocal and played guitar) who felt that the addition of singer Donna Washburn made him unnecessary and original Byrds drummer Michael Clarke. The new line up didn't gel as well as the first and Gene Clark was less prolific as a songwriter. Expanded to a six piece the best music here (including a stunning reimagination of John Lennon's "Don't Let Me Down")captures the power of the debut quite well but with the band's main songwriter running empty on songs they are dependent on the cover material they chose. The best originals here such as "Kansas City Southern" more than hold their own but the second album is marred with filer.

Sound quality is pretty good on this reissue. I'd suggest going for The Fantastic Expedition of Dillard & Clark/Through the Morning, Through the NightCD which has BOTH their albums as well as ALL the singles they released in their brief two year lifespan. It's a better deal (although for some strange reason some of the tracks are jumbled a bit). It's a good album--not great--but still worthwhile for Clark and Dillards fans."
