"This is a great CD but it would be worth buying only for War is Over, Dillinger's toast over the Errol Thompson/Joe Gibbs dub of George Nooks's take on Tribal War, orignally sung by Little Roy. The song is introduced by a lively spoken exchange in patois between Dillinger and a friend about the peace treaty that was supposed to settle gang violence that had culminated with the infamous Green Bay Massacre in 1978.
The Thompson/Nooks dub begins as Dillinger spouts three spoken lines in stirring patios rhythms, each one bending up in an almost indignant tones. He then lands right on the beat and growls the next two lines in a most menacing manner, before launching into the main part of his toast, "Son, don't take your guns to town, cuz the war is over."
I have not done a good job of describing it. You have to hear it to understand what I mean. It is one the finest demonstrations of Effective Musical Phrasing that I have ever heard. I am very moved every time I listen to it."
