Competent Debut
Worgelm | United States | 02/12/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is a respectable, well-produced debut (perhaps swan song?) for Divine Regale, who here are just starting to work out their _Parallels_-era Fates Warning fetish (I suppose touring with those guys probably didn't help *that* out too much :-). Lead crooner Dwight Hill, especially on tracks like "Cry to Heaven", is a dead-ringer for Queensryche's Geoff Tate, while drummer Chris Anderson owes a startling debt to Fates Warning's Mark Zonder with his crisp cymbal work, subtle electronic and percussive textures and ultra-economical fills. While all of the musicians are respectably well-equipped to autopilot this type of standard-issue prog through the now-cluttered post-Dream Theater landfill of bands with impressive mastery of time signature changes, i'll concur with the other reviewer that the keyboard player Jason Keazer definitely has the lion's share of standout moments, his organic playing even managing to buoy the somewhat goofy lyrical themes of "Underworld." The best tracks IMO are the bookends, the energetic opener "Ocean Mind" and the multilayered epic track "Forever Changing Winds"..."
Why doesn't this band get more pub?

"I heard this band some time ago but had a difficult time finding this cd. The trouble I went through finding it on the internet was definitely worth it though. This band has great chops all the way around. The keyboard player in particular is the real deal here. He makes the band sound much better and doesn't do it with a lot of flash.A great metal/progressive band with a great singer as well. I am sad to hear he has left the band, which may be why they haven't released anything since. I wish they would because they are right up there with the best in the genre, including Dream Theater, Queensryche, Rush, and the like. They even have some of the classic Journey/Boston sound from time to time.Apart from their great sound, the songs on this disc range from very progressive (i.e. Ocean Mind) to very lyrical (i.e. Horizon and Forever Changing Winds) to flat out power metal (i.e. Cry to Heaven and Underworld). My only wish, besides wanting this band to release some more stuff, is that this disc was longer. I think it only clocks in at around 48 minutes or so. However, it is a very likeable 48 minutes!"

"You know, I picked this album up about 2 years ago...and was blown away. From semi-symphonic to progressive to power, this album spans the gamut of modern metal stylings and puts together a great array of songs. You are guaranteed to find SOMETHING on this CD to your liking.I'm not sure what's going on with this group or if they're even still together...I know that the singer on this album had left and thy were looking for a new one. Here's hoping we get something more from them in the future...Ocean Mind certainly sets sail on the right course."
