The Other Trumpet Player Named Dizzy

""Blues In Trinity" (not Blue) is a solid hard bop session from another trumpet player named Dizzy. This album by Dizzy Reece was available as a limited edition CD domestically in the Connoisseur series a few years back. That edition had two bonus tracks that this one does not, however, the disc does not suffer from their absence. Looking at the sultry cover you would think this an album of great ballads. Wrong, there are only two here -- the standards "I Had The Craziest Dream" and Monk's "'Round About Midnight" -- and they are enjoyable but not the disc's centerpiece. The four up-tempo numbers -- the title track, "Color Blind," "Close-Up," and "Shepherd's Serenade" -- were all written by Reece, and ironically are the album's most interesting, particularly the latter two which feature both Reece and Donald Byrd on trumpet. The rest of the band for this recording is Tubby Hayes on tenor sax, Terry Shannon on piano, Lloyd Thompson on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. As this album was recorded in England, all these players were based there (with the exception of Taylor), and are not as well-known as a result. Dizzy Reece's "Comin' On" is currently available domestically (and at a lower price than this selection), and I recommend purchasing that first. If you enjoy it, "Blues In Trinity" is a great next step."
