Diamond David Lee Roth is back in all his self-congratulatory glory. This will come as good news to the legions of old-VH fans mourning the group's hastily aborted reunion effort of the mid '90s. Roth's voice still oozes with sleaze, and his charisma is palpable, even if he can't scream with the authority of days past. But bear in mind that the DLR Band features one original Van Halen member. Guitarist John Lowery is a studio whiz, capable of approximating Eddie Van Halen's harmonic squeals and lightning-fast leads, but neither he nor Roth can write like Eddie. And while tunes such as "Slam Dunk!," "Counter-Blast," and "Little Texas" sound punchy, they lack that knockout blow Van Halen once delivered so effectively. Elsewhere, the DLR Band sound like prime-era Led Zeppelin, with Roth as frontman. This is certainly a fun listen. Just don't expect the second coming of Van Halen. --Jon Wiederhorn« less

"That's right folks Diamond David Lee Roth is back and he put out one of the best albums of his post Van Halen career. This album is equal parts Van Halen and David Lee Roth solo, and 100% fun. He proves to us once again that he is the best frontman of all time by putting out the most rockin album of 1998. I know I'm a little late with the review but hey better late than never. The Songs: Slam Dunk - The first single, very catchy Dave's voice is great, excellent guitar work courtesy of John Lowery. 10/10Blacklight - Another rocker, with a great chorus and a a harmonica solo by the man himself. 8/10Counter - Blast - One of the best songs on the album, Dave's voice is very powerful and the guitar part is very good. 10/10Lose the Dress (Keep the Shoes) - This is a decent song, great title but not as good as I thought it would be. 4/10Little Texas - Another decent song but there's something about it and I just can't get into it. 4/10King of the Hill - Great rocker, Dave's voice is awesome, it just works. 9/10Going Places - Great acoustic based song featuring Terry Kilgore on guitar. 7/10Wa Wa Zat! - Awesome, nothing more to say. 10/10Relentless - Great guitar song, very solid rhythm part, vintage sounding Dave vocals. 9/10 Indeedio - Straight forward rocker, featuring the late Mike Hartman on guitar. Great song 8/10Right Tool for the Job - Not bad but definately one of the weaker songs on the album. 5/10Tight - Another awesome rocker, everything about it is great. 9/10 Weekend with the Babysitter - This another song that I expected to be better than it was, not really bad though. 6/10Black Sand - Masterpiece, this is a very melodic acoustic based song, this is really a masterpiece. Great guitar playing, great vocals. 10/10There you have it folks, my take on the DLR Band album, definately something worth checking out."

"when you've got this album.
Best Van Halen album since FAIR WARNING!
I love Vai too, but this is better than anything Dave did with him."

"Whoah.
When this thing came out, us David Lee Roth fans were apprehensive. In recent years, Dave's music had become more experimental, covering jazz and blues tones..ultimately pulling him away from the original Van Halen frontman Rocker that we all knew him as.
Dave's statement about this album: "People always said all I wrote and sang about was women, money, and partying. I never started out purposely doing that before, so I decided with this album, thats EXACTLY what I would do!"
DLR band bring's the ROCK back to Dave, and he delivers it to us, the fans. This album is clearly a huge need during a time (when it was released) when the Band Van Halen, after dumping Dave to the curb again, was in disarray, and Sammy Hagar was busy arguing with them through the papers and such. So what does Dave do? The same thing he did in 1985, he went and assembled a great band, drew up some cool packaging for the CD, and let out all the jams with this dark, Razer sharp rock record.
Dave's vocals are lowered to more of a wolves snarl in several of the tunes, and it definitley does not take away, but adds to, the power the record has from track to track. Tunes like "Slam Dunk" which the NBA has used on several CNN highlight reels, Blacklight, King of the Hill, and the melodic semi-ballad "goin places" with it's awesome guitar intro, are just some of the hits that are laden throughout this album.
Dave's humor and one liners are still evident in some songs, which for fans who miss the guy who said things like "do you remember when that girl was prommmm queeeeeen?" and "I lost my pen-cillll!" will be an open armed, welcome return.
Welcome back Diamond Dave, we've been expecting you!

"When I hit play for the first time after getting this album, I heard the driving "Slam Dunk", and thought, this might be alright. Obviously, and shamelessly, Dave is trying to recapture the sound and the fury of the old Van Halen days, and does a fair job. Some of the lyrics are pretty silly, though, even for Dave. "Counter Blast" is pretty dumb, being all about computers and the internet. And I doubt Dave is too adept on a basketball court ("Slam Dunk"). The guitarists obviously have worshipped at the Eddie-Alter, and the double-bass drum pulse reeks of Alex Van Halen. Loved Dave in Van Halen, but without eachother, they don't stand up so well. Sorry, Dave, but I still love ya! At least this towers above the musical abomination that is Van Halen III."

"In the vein of old "Van Halen".Kick A-s all the way! Id take this dlr band record over "Eat Em' And Smile" and "Skyscraper" any day of the week.Less keyboards and synths, more guitar driven, raw and punchy. Many critics ripped this when it came out,but they were a bunch of know nothing idiots! This sucker cranks and Dave did one hell of a job on it.Vai acts as though he's too good to associate with Roth nowadays...screw him! Also,i believe this disc surpasses anything post-5150 from VH.By the way the Bettie Page/American Flag cover art is absolutely beautiful ! Salute.----------------"
