"This song originated as a poem by the late Sir John Betjeman, Britain's Poet Laureate 1972-1984. The poem has an intriguing title: "The Irish Unionist's Farewell to Greta Hellstrom in 1922" which was wisely abbreviated to "Farewell" by Mike Read when he set it to music and invited Don McLean to record it. It first appeared in an album called "Songs: Betjeman & Read" (2002), consisting of several Betjeman poems turned to songs by Read, and sung by well-known singers, among them Donovan, Marc Almond and Justin Hayward.

"Farewell" is a poignant song/poem of parting, expressing a delicate balance between attraction and restraint. Don McLean sings it expressively in his incomparable voice, doing justice to the nuances of feeling in the words. It is the only song from the album that has been made into a single. If you're looking for a love song that is unique and moving, this single is a must! I've played mine from the album countless times."
