CD Reviews

One of the best from the "Gentle Giant."

"Don Williams truly is one of the greatest country (or any style) singer/performers of all time. His vocal style is warm and smooth and sounds as good live as it does after "studio production." This collection is well done, with a nice mix of ballads, and folk and blues-tinged songs that gently rock you. "Senorita", one of my all-time favorites is included here; it's Latin-laced horns, lush xylophone textures, and calypso-style drums blend perfectly. This tune (and others here) showcase Don at his best- transcending the "hick" music that pervades so much of country music. Like other great artists, Don is not afraid to reach beyond "country" to create viable and worthwhile music. Don's folk/americana roots show through on his best stuff, and this is a fine place for a music fan to start. While you're at it, pick up Greatest Hits III, another finely-mixed collection. Well, heck, buy 'em all for that matter- you can't go wrong with Don."
Another Short-Played Hits Set By Curb

"Since his two Capitol albums are out of print, this is your only chance to get those hits. But with the inclusion of four big hits from his earlier period(available on dozens of compilations) instead of "What's The Score", "She's A Heart Full", "Old Coyote Town", "Come From The Heart" and "Shot Full Of Love", this is unwisely put together. Try to get the Import-Album 20 COUNTRY CLASSICS(1998) from EMI in Great Britain. Then you'll get both albums and all hits on one cd.With that said, not all his hits from the Capitol-period were top-notch either, especially boring ballads like "Senorita". Adding a horn section to "Heartbeat In The Darkness" made that one his last no.1 single, but I didn't like that direction particulary. The big stand-outs from these singles were Bob Corbin's "I'll Never Be In Love Again" and Bob McDill's "Another Place Another Time". Two heartfelt performances."
