"Indian film music may sound derivative and strange at first to western ears, but repeated listenings will reveal that it's a unique genre in and of itself. It incorporates Indian musical structures (1/4 tones, etc), western musical idioms, and sometimes Asian and African rhythms. The singing is strikingly rich and beautiful, and will have you singing along without having a clue what the words are.This CD is notable because it includes a very famous Indian film song: "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" (track #2) or "My name is Chin Chin Chu." It's about as catchy as a song can be. When I meet someone from India they almost always know the song and are very surprised that I (being very non-Indian) have heard it. They always ask "How do you know that song?" I tell them that I have a CD that includes it (obviously, this one).The songs on this CD represent some of the best of Indian film music from approximately the 1960s. The sound quality is less than perfect, but more than listenable. Since nearly all Indian films are musicals (complete with intricate accompanying dance numbers), all of these songs have been wrenched out of context (but unless you speak some of the various languages represented here, you probably won't be bothered). What you will find are interesting and singable melodies, incredible rhythms, breathtaking singing, and 21 reasons to madly dance around the room.The CD case has a gatefold with pictures from some Indian movies, as well as a list of the movies the songs were taken from. There's not much more information, so listeners are left to themselves to find more context for this music. Not that you need it to enjoy the music, it speaks for itself, however, the lack of information does leave the western listener in somewhat of a vaccuum as to the where and why of the music.This CD and the first volume of the series are great sources for being introduced to this unique music form. It's all enormously entertaining, and while you're at it, see if local video stores carry any Indian films and rent them. This will complete the experience and give the music on this CD a new perspective."
