Synopsis

Amazon.com
Abetted by old friends (keyboard crazy Augie Meyers) and new acquaintances (the Gourds), Sir Doug concocts a typically savory stew filled with country, Cajun, blues, Tex-Mex, and rock. "When you're feelin' like Hermann Hesse / and you're playin' too much chess / just have a beer, no need to fear / and get a life," he sings on the irresistible bubble-gum pop of "Get a Life." Next thing you know, steel guitar whines (thanks to Tommy Detamore) on the country weeper "St. Olav's Gate" while the Samm Dogg croons, "It's red meat and whiskey like a coyote drunk on the moon." And so it goes, as the Texas Tornado rolls through sloppy garage country, retro-soul ballads, buoyant groove rock, a Ray Price cover, and a steel-drenched send-up of "The Ballad of Davy Crockett." Tornado indeed! --Marc Greilsamer

His spirit lives on in the music...

"SDQ 98 has become my favorite album associated with the late and truly great Doug Sahm. My discovery of Doug Sahm's music went backwards from the Texas Tornados to his earlier solo and Sir Douglas Quintet work. SDQ 98 has the best of the Doug Sahm sound. Blended genres--rock, blues, country, tex-mex--it is all here in some of the most melodious work Sir Doug has ever done. Joined on this one by his long time collaborator Augie Meyers, his son Shawn and alternative country pioneers the Gourds, the songs on this album will make you appreciate what a talent we lost when this music legend left us. His spirit, however, will live on in great recordings like this one. If you were ever a fan of Doug Sahm, the Sir Douglas Quintet, or the Texas Tornados, you must have this album."
