"After Vini Reilly had lost his contract with the bankruptcy of the Factory label, he continued releasing albums, studio efforts ("Sex and death", "Fidelity") as well as rarities collections ("Dry", "Red shoes"), and some re-issues. He has created and perfected a style of music so distinctive that there seems to be little incentive for ambition in recent years. The guitar playing on this record is typically exceptional, but Eley's singing is childish and the lyrics are trite. One standout track here: "Pigeon" comes up with web-like guitar lines, swimming in an ocean of delay and reverb. The bright "Organ donor" is obviously cut from a live performance, and "I B yours" is lovely pop fluff. The rest is a rather tedious affair, with short guitar/rhythm loops being repeated and repeated for up to seven minutes on a single track. It lacks the magic atmosphere and unpredictability of Vini's best albums. "Time was.." is an o.k. purchase for hardcore fans and probably interesting to those who have never listen to the band before. But in retrospect, it's clear in this album why Vini's '90s-output wasn't a major force in avantgarde rock music."
Not the Same as the rest, and Quite Good

"I am an avid DC fan and own nearly everything they/he has ever put out. Being so, I have been consistently pleased with the changes in direction since the lp Vini Rielly. From the first play on Christmas morning 2000 this record really drew me in. Track 1 "Organ Donor" could be off the amazing experimental "Sex & Death" with it's sparse vocals and loads of Vini's Space Echo guitar and
Bruce's percussion.Track 2 "Pigeon" is a little slice of ambient heaven.Track 3 "I B Yours" surprises the longtime fan with tablas and is a bit odd the first few times with Eli's naked and awkwardly in your face vocals.
Then I took the song as a bit of a fairy tale sort of like when you read the translation of a traditional love song from another language (even
Nusrat Fetah Ali Khan's lyrics can seem trite in english). Good song.Track 4 "20 trees" is just what we love about DC. Vini singing about uncertainty and lost love with lots of his guitar, ambient waves and Bruce
on Tablas. Yes!I will admit that like many of his CDs there is an odd track that will send you running on first listen. Here it is "Drinking Song". Silly trite
rhyming about killing oneself by drinking.Luckily Vini and Eli bring it to another high with "Sing To Me". So simple, so good. Spanish guitar and little more until Bruce arrives midway
and Vini brings some of those good ol' blues vocal samples. Vini started this on the lp Vini Reilly, way before Moby.Feel free to contact me about DC or any music."
