"Overall a very good CD. For me, though, he recorded a couple rather obscure (to me) hymns that didn't seem to have much of a melody (you obviously NEED to know the words to enjoy these particular tunes) and the arrangements were consequently stange sounding to me and just detracted from the CD as a whole. There's got to be PLENTY of others hymns a wider swatch of western christianity would more likely recognize. Oh, well. In fact, Ed Sweeney has a CD of christmas tunes that is absolutely GREAT !Ed Sweeney recorded a cassette some years back entitiled "Traditions" but it's apparently out of print and was never released as a CD -- a great pity, since that recording and choice of material is better (to me) than "American Sampler" -- but "Sampler" is still a fine CD. Mr. Sweeney and friends play with an admirable simplicity and are a pleasure to listen to (especially if you know all the tunes already!)."
