CD Reviews

Magnificient
07/01/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I just purchased this CD. I didn't realize what a terrific singer Ed Townsend is. It's too bad his talent didn't go very far. His voice is terrific! He puts a lot of feeling and gusto to each song. Romance should be his middle name."

"Though Townsend had only limited success as a recording artist, he had significant success as a songwriter and producer, working with the late great Marvin Gaye, among others."
Nice Renditions Of Some Old Standards .... But Pricey

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Ed Townsend's Methodist church upbringing, including choir duty, is evident in his mellow baritone renditions of some old standards. Born April 16, 1929 in Fayetteville, Tennessee he studied law for a while and then had a brief stint as a band singer with the Horace Heidt orchestra in the early Fifties before latching onto a recording contract with Capitol.

His first - and only - big hit was the self-penned For Your Love which b/w Over And Over Again (not in this set), and backed by the Gerald Wilson orchestra, went to # 7 R&B and # 13 Billboard Top 100 in May 1958. Then, showing his preference for the old songs, he took a REALLY ancient one, When I Grow Too Old To Dream, to # 59 Top 100 in October with the backing of Stan Applebaum & His Orchestra, b/w You Are My Everything. Those, too, are omitted from this collection.

Further hits evaded him, but in 1963 he wrote and then produced The Love Of My Man, performed by his wife Theola Kilgore (a # 3 R&B and # 21 Billboard Hot 100).

If you want to hear nicely done renditions of some great old songs, and don't mind the price being asked, then by all means buy this CD. But if you're looking for his one big hit, try the excellent Teenage Crush Vol. 2 which offers 27 other big hits of the era."
