A Sleeper Indie Rock Hit
LeftManOut | TheCityThatNeverSleeps, FL | 06/10/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I'm so glad I accidently stumbled upon Edison Glass. Out of complete accident one day I downloaded the song "Minutes for Memories" and instantly I fell in love. Bands usually only get one song to impressive me, and this NY based four piece did exactly that. If you're unfamiliar with their sound (which most likely you will be), Edison Glass plays an upbeat brand of indie rock, full of sing-along melodies, catchy rhythms and poignant lyrics. If this type of rock and roll suits you, then Edison Glass is probably the one band that you need to hear this year.

After the first seconds of "My Fair One" start rolling, most are going to be captivated by the band's sound. Right out the gate Edison Glass presents the listener with exactly what you want to hear; Excellent, catchy music. The guitars are tight, yet play together with a loose relationship, which makes none of the songs sound calculated or forced. There's a very free and vibrant mystique to the band's sound, and they can easily go from a slower, atmospheric piece like "Starlight" to an upbeat rocker "In Such A State". The drums dabble in all areas, and can range from steady rhythms to quite complicated patterns. The way the band tends to balance their sound though is also most impressive. As the listener you get just enough of all spectrums of the music to keep you entertained and interested the whole time.

"Forever", "In Such A State" and "Starlight" are the real stand outs to me, but the whole record in itself is an impressive collection of songs. For a 13 track record that clocks in at just over 54 minutes, it flows perfectly every step of the way. Having the cd take you through twists and turns is the most exciting part, as you can one minute be singing along with melodies of "Angelic In Heart", before being subdued by the more relaxed "Minutes for Memories". Elsewhere "My Fair One" and "The River" satisfy your rock needs, while the title track and "You Mean The World To Me" are both quieter, more emotional songs. Overall there isn't one bad song in the bunch, and if any one of the previously mentioned songs does anything for you, this is really a must purchase.

"A Burn Or A Shiver" just might be the best indie rock album to hit shelves all this year just judging from my immediate listen. That might be a bold statement, but just one listen to the magic and emotion that is Edison Glass and you might be feeling the same way. "A Burn Or A Shiver" is recommended to all fans of indie and rock in general. Everyone should find something about this release to appreciate. It may not be the most well known album on the market at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that Edison Glass won't take long to catch on with a lot of people. Absolutely an outstanding album.

Catchy and Confident (4.5 stars)

"As Indie Rock has taken a spiraling turn over the past decade, different bands are getting much more experimental with their musical vibe. Circa Survive gets technical, Spill Canvas has supreme sing-along anthems, Ariel Kill Him is subtle to an addicting point, and now comes Edison Glass with hooks that make you choke and an unbelievable sense of timing that comes through in their music.

Just when you think they're going to bust into a sing-song chorus (typical with pop/rock bands), they come through with a sick guitar solo that has you listening over and over and over again. What makes Edison Glass different is they have a keen sense to avoid predictability. Also, they have catchy hooks that make you sing that same song in your head. The guitars are subtle enough to give an indie rock feel, and heavy enough to bob your head throughout their songs.

The best track on the album has to be "When All We Have is Taken/Comfort", the first time I heard this song, I instantly fell in love. "If I'm unable when you were calling, if I'm unable when all we have is taken..." is an unbelievably catchy verse. The amazing guitar work in this song is what really makes this song great, though. The guitar solo after the second chorus (about 3 minutes into the song) is one of the greatest dual guitar solos I've ever heard. I couldn't help but start the track over repeatedly until I was satisfied, but the great thing is that I'm not satisfied; I listen to this CD all the time, it's ridiculous. I also recommend the song "In Such a State".

The only reason I didn't give this release 5 stars is even in such a great album like this, some of the songs in the middle tend to get repetitive and slow down the pace a little bit. Other than that, "A Burn or a Shiver" is one of the best releases of 2006, and probably the best indie rock album this year in my opinion.

Rock on! Later!"

"There is a ton of diverse musical styles blended here - from punk to indie to grunge. Combine that with very talented execution and slick production and you've got one of the best albums of the year so far. Also, the lyrics stay away from cliched phrases and is very impressive"
