Synopsis

Tubin was Estonia's greatest composer, and one of this century's most distinctive symphonists. Järvi conducted the Fifth Symphony in New York a couple of years ago to tremendous critical acclaim. It's an exciting work by any standard, energized by two sets of timpani that slug it out at various climactic moments. The ballet Kratt makes ample use of Estonian folk motifs, and concludes with one of the loudest and most percussive movements this side of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. Järvi has been this composer's most persuasive advocate, recording all ten of the symphonies for BIS. If you like this one, you'll like the others too. --David Hurwitz

Exhilarating Estonian Rhythm in Symphony and Ballet Suite
Shuji Ogino | Boston, MA USA | 06/20/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Symphonies of a yet-to-be-revived Estonian composer, Eduard Tubin, have distinct rhythm, which is best heard in his 3rd and 5th symphony. In the 5th symphony, the 1st movement is magnificent. The 2nd movement is somewhat calm, serene. The first half of the 3rd movement entirely consists of march rhythm, which is interrupted by song of strings. Then roaring rhythm resumes, leading to the coda. Suite from the ballet "Kratt" is also an exhilarating piece. Neeme Jarvi's prolific recordings are hardly less than satisfying. For this recording, he conducts Bamberger Symphoniker, with which he recorded complete symphonies of Bohuslav Martinu, another yet-to-be-revived composer."
