CD ReviewsThis is a must have! jetnyc | Hoboken, NJ United States | 03/12/2002 (5 out of 5 stars) "Fantasic disc from Nils Petter Molvaers guitarist, Eivind Aarset. The disc blends drum & bass, electronic, and jazz to create a very unique and inspiring disc. If you like any of Molvaer's stuff, this is a natural extension just with more guitar. Get it if you can find it -- you won't be disappointed." Scandinavian conception of jazz A.J.H. Woodcount | 09/18/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "Electrique noir is Scandinavian jazz like Nils Petter Molvaer and Bugge Wesseltoft(with electronics, beats etc.)With the exception that the album sounds a bit more 'noir' and there obviously is some more guitarplaying going on.
Aarset takes the time to build the song up, but when he gets there it can get really groovy/funky/heavy... The guitarplaying is easily compared with Terje Rypdal. Not in every song are big solo's but just sounds, chords or licks. Together with the sad (Scandinavian?) atmosphere that's what makes the album work for me. The music fills the room, the guitar can sound very big, yet the music is very introvert. When you've seen Aarset play live, you know what I mean. (For those who haven't: A man with hippy-hair sitting down with a guitar and a lot of electronic stuff around him, only standing up to get off stage; note: a guitar-player standing up is equaly boring.) Aarset uses a lot of beats, but not only the funky ones. Sometimes they are real slow and one of the best songs (the third one on the album)has a Mike Oldfield meets Pat Metheny-like theme. Maybe you should concider bying it. FJB/O!-music 2006" |
