Album Description

Under Lord Menuhin's tutelage, Yoohong Lee has come into his own performing Elgar's Cello Concerto with the award-winning Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. While studying at the Royal College of Music in London, he was appointed a Queen Mother's Scholar under the tutelage of Steven Doane and Late William Pleeth. He currently performs in numerous festivals across Europe, including the Casals Festival in Kronberg, Rencontres Musicales d'Evian, and the Gstaad and Colmar Festivals.

Quite "autumnal"

"I guess when it comes to the cello concerto, Elgar (along with Dvorak) tops the list of most popular. There are probably about a hundred good recordings of the Elgar concerto to choose from, but this one also quite good (and reasonably priced at this writing around $3). I have never heard of Yoohong Lee but he is a fine cellist who brings forth the concerto with mastery of his instrument as well as depth of passion which is very important as this concerto was Elgar's "swan song" composed in the wake of World War I and the death of his wife.

Maestro Yehudi Menuhin conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra whose playing is competent but not overbearing, and who better than Lord Yehudi to concoct Elgar's music, as he worked under the grand old Edward Elgar himself as a boy.

The concerto is paired with Elgar's "Nursery Suite" which is a delightful and playful piece, quite the contrast to the cello concerto which is quite "autumnal"."
