JB & Elgar - The Mono Alternative

"This is one of two performances by Sir John Barbirolli of Elgar's 2nd Symphony and the Cockaigne Concert Overture available in EMI's British Composers series. This title features the 1954 mono recording of the 2nd Symphony with the Halle Orchestra, while the other is a stereo remake from 1964. This CD also features the Cockaigne Concert Overture (a JB specialty) in its mono rendition from 1954, while its stereo counterpart appears with Barbirolli's stereo recording of Elgar's 1st Symphony (which I have previously reviewed). While most will probably prefer the stereo versions, fans of JB (and there are lots, even a Barbirolli Society!) will certainly not want to pass on this title."
