CD Reviews

Superb performances of two loved works!
John N. Taylor | Palm Desert, CA, USA | 08/25/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I have several performances of these works. My favorite until now has been the classic du Pre/Barbirolli of the Elgar and the Yo Yo Ma of the Walton.

Muller-Schott must be about the age now as when I saw du Pre play this. He brings the same passion and , if anything, even greater technical brilliance. His is now my favorite version and I am sure it will become yours if you buy it!

I would urge anyone to hear and buy this disc - you will not regret it. The conducting of Previn is as assured and great as ever - in repertoire that he obviously knows and loves. I hope sometime he will return to Vaughan Williams and Walton, to hear hs latest thoughts on these composers.

Lush Playing with Great Sound
David James Curry | Sydney, Australia | 08/31/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This recording of both concertos is very fine. The playing of young virtuoso Muller-Schott is replete with lush sound and sure technique. The orchestral part is ably overseen by Previn. Muller-Schott tends to swell his notes a touch excessively for my taste in the Elgar but this effect does add to the romantic feel of the work as a whole. In the Walton he does not do this and the whole thing is a great pleasure to listen to. My only other version of this is with Tortelier, a great reading but this one comes with the latest in sound recording quality. A great artist on a great instrument (Gofriller)with top accompaniment. Highly recommended."

"In a section in the accompanying booklet, the cellist, Daniel Muller-Schott mentions how special both concertos on this disc are for him. This indeed is borne out in readings which demonstrate both consummate skill and depth of feeling!

My benchmarks for the Elgar have been Yo Yo Ma/Previn, Schiff/Elder and of course du Pre/Barbirolli.

Muller-Schott imbues great nobility into the first movement without it being inflated, the scherzo is dazzlingly played and the other two movements have a rhapsodic and spontaneous feel without the heaviness of some versions.

The more intense Walton concerto finds both soloist and conductor in wonderful dialogue. There is a strong sense of `nature music' in this work and this is eloquently brought out in Muller-Schott's and Previn's interpretation. It is a thoughtful and searching reading where the technically challenging sections find him sounding sure and strong.

This is a tremendously rewarding coupling and one that I will frequently turn to.

The booklet notes are a model of their kind.
