"These recordings were assembled to honor the centenary of Elisabeth Lutyens birth. They are a splendid sampling of her middle period. Lutyens developed a 12-tone technique during the late 1930s and Second World War era quite independent of the Vienesse school who were little performed in England at the time. When she was introduced to Webern's work, she was immediatly attracted to his crystaline sound world. The works on this CD bear the imprint of that encounter, but never as immitations. Lutyens was mature enough at the time of her Webern discovery to absorb it without losing her distinct individuality. These works invite repeated listenings with ever-renewed discovery and excitement. The performances are simple stllar."
