Oh The Beethoven !

"Containing as it does Schwarzkopf's famous performances of Bach's cantata "Jauchzet Gott In Allen Landen" (a little too much breath in the coloratura) and Mozart's motet "Exultate Jubilate", this is an indispensable disc. But those wonderful recordings are upstaged by long unavailable performances of Beethoven's concert aria "Ah, Perfido !" and the big aria from FIDELIO. These were originally fillers on Von Karajan's first recordings of the Beethoven symphonies. No other singer of these pieces brings such a strong combination of technique, beauty of voice and expressive word coloring. These are simply the two best versions of these much recorded arias. Throw in an astonishing version of Handel's wonderfully wacky "Sweet Bird", and you have what may be "the" Schwarzkopf disc to own."
