"This is an AMAZING album! Ella Washington is a little known Southern Soul singer who recorded one LP and a handful of singles for John Richbourg's Sound Stage 7 label from 1967 to 1971. If you haven't just clicked "BUY THIS" I guess you don't know yet- old JR was a white DJ who ended up producing some of the best music ever using African American singers with little but church training and recording them in front of bands arranged by some of Memphis' best country arrangers and musicians. ELLA WASHINGTON sounds like "Dusty in Memphis" might have sounded if Dusty had listened to a lot more Billie Holiday and Tammy Wynette. I've never heard a more beautiful, plaintive sound. I've loved this voice from the minute I first heard "He Called Me Baby" and never forgotten her. It had taken me over 20 years to find 22 of the 27 songs on this CD. Now Garry J. Cape- a British disc producer- has put out ALL of her known secular recordings on one disc from his Soulscape label, including three great songs previously unreleased. Soulscape is a small concern and this pressing is limited. If you love great singing, tight horn sections, buy this one right away."
