"DRG Records presents "STACCATO/PARIS SWINGS" -- Elmer Bernstein (April 4, 1922 - 18 August 2004) was an Academy and two-time Golden Globe award winning American film score composer --- He was famous for composing music for The Ten Commandments, The Man With the Golden Arm and The Magnificent Seven --- Bernstein often featured jazz soloists and the feeling of the blues permeates the original scores for STACCATO (1959) and PARIS SWINGS (1960) --- Throughout, Bernstein draws upon bold brass, ominous saxophone, suave melodies, and erupting tempos to heighten these vivid aural portraits of mystery, intrigue, and romance --- While not strictly speaking a jazz composer, film soundtrack icon Elmer Bernstein has often demonstrated a deep affinity for jazz in his work --- Bernstein's compositions have shades of "Peter Gunn" (1959), the music that changed television and film music forever by the great Henry Mancini.



Bernstein wrote the theme songs or other music for more than 200 films and TV shows, including The Magnificent Seven (1960), The Great Escape (1963), The Ten Commandments (1956), The Man with the Golden Arm (1955), Sweet Smell of Success (1957), The Comancheros (1961), To Kill a Mockingbird (1962), Walk on the Wild Side (1962), The Sons of Katie Elder (1965), True Grit (1969), Ghostbusters (1984) and the fanfare used in the National Geographic television specials --- His theme for The Magnificent Seven is also familiar to television viewers, as it was used in commercials for Marlboro cigarettes. An Unusual but Very Listenable Package

"While Staccato and Paris Swings make an odd coupling, both are very good albums. The former is the soundtrack from the short-lived, John Cassavetes detective series, Staccato. Bernstein was great at writing and conducting moody jazz scores. This is a good example. Although very different, Paris Swings is a nice rendering of French standards by a small jazz group. Well worth the price!"
