"Engenheiros do Hawaii were an ignored band on the scenery of brazilian rock until 1990, when they made this brilliant album. Two songs were a true sucess on radios: "Era um garoto..." and "O exercito de um homem so"."O Papa e Pop" has won the ShowBizz (a famous music magazine in Brazil) the Best Rock Album of 1990 Award.The track "A violencia travestida faz seu trottoir" has a special participation of Patricia Marx."

A Classic of Brazilian Rock

"This is one of the giants among Brazilian rock bands from the 80s and 90s. With lyrics that capture the ambiguities of the coming of age, as well as the angst of living in Brazil in the late 80s and early 90s, Engenheiros do Hawaii really touch the hearts of those of us who lived through those uncertain years. That said, they are not overtly political lyrically, distinguishing them as one of Brazil's most poetic rock bands. O Papa e Pop, released in that peculiar, triumphant interlude between the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the Gulf war of 1991, is one of those rarest of albums: one that is an original, but also plays like a "best of" collection.



While the Western world was searching for its identity after the Berlin Wall's fall and Brazil searched for its identity as a new democracy, Engenheiros do Hawaii somehow captured a feeling of searching in Exercito de Um Homem So (one-man army), the kind of song that can mean many things depending on how one interprets it. In the same album, Engenheiros do Hawaii also managed to write lovesongs like Olhos Iguais Aos Seus (Eyes Like Yours) and Pra Ser Sincero (Sincerely). The distinction of these songs, is an absence of excessive effusion, for which the genre of lovesongs is notorious.



The only time that Engenheiros miss the mark was in the song, "Era Um Garoto Que Como Eu, Amava Os Beatles e Os Rolling Stones" (There Once Was A Kid, Who Like Me Loved The Beatles and the Rolling Stones). Released fifteen years after the fall of Saigon, this track is not really in keeping with the ethereal thematics of the rest of the CD and is out of of the collective experience of Brazilians.



With the profound, poetic lyrics of Humberto Gessinger, along with the guitar playing of Augusto Licks, O Papa e Pop is a definite keeper for anyone who's into Brazilian Rock."
