Review of music from Once Upon a Time in America
Arthur J. Stone | USA | 08/31/2004

"I saw the movie Once Upon a Time in America starring Robert DeNiro, James Woods, et al., and was just haunted by both the movie and the brilliant score composed by Ennio Morricone. This is music that honestly I feel was inspired. Notwithstanding the fact that this is according to Roger Ebert perhaps one of the best movies of the eighties, Mr.Morricone was absolutely robbed of the oscar winning score that year. I have more than one copy as I don't want anything to happen to it. Really though, its always best to see the movie because then when you are playing the various themes, you know just where you are with the characters. If you happen to run across this CD don't walk, but run to grab it as it is a treasure."
Best Soundtrack Ever!!

"I grew up listening to Motown and R&B on the South Side of Chicago. I only mention this to express how this soundtrack affects people from all walks of life, not just classical musicians and music critics. First, let me say that I love this movie. It is on my list of the top 10 movies of all time. I stumbled across this movie 3yrs. ago while up late one night. I have wanted the sound track ever since, but did not know if one existed or not. I was very happy to find that I was not alone in my love for the movie and soundtrack. No one that I know has seen the movie, nor quite obviously heard some of the best music since dare I say, 'Mozart'. The melody brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. The movie has the perfect ending, and the music helps make it so."
Very high on my top ten

"One of those randomly beautiful soundtracks. Aching and tortured and beautiful. It features pan flutes, penny whistles, and plain old whistling. Some jazz tracks liven it up, but mostly the score is bittersweet and tragic to the max, all of it heavy and lush in the way of strings. A must have, but then this is Morricone we're talking about."
