Synopsis

Album Description
Review by John MansellAnother re-issue from the gigantic collection of scores by maestro Ennio Morricone. Originally issued on LP back in 1972, this Italian made thriller, was quite a sophisticated and complex movie which was directed superbly by Michele Lupo and starred Kirk Douglas, Guiliano Gemma and Florinda Bolkan. Morricone's musical score is built around a central theme that utilises an inventive and haunting flugelhorn performance. For the most part the music or musical sounds on the score are rather downbeat and almost drab and depressing, but this is probably what Morricone was setting out to do when he took on the assignment. There are no real themes within the score aside from the fourth track , 'A Florinda', which is typically sweet and poignant, written in a traditional Morricone style. The remainder of the score is written in a more modern or avant-garde Morricone style. The score complimented and punctuated the movie marvellously, but I am not sure if it stands on its own as a listening experience that one could call entertaining or pleasurable, but again this is the whole point of movie music, to enhance the movie, elevate the scenes on screen and support the action being acted out on that screen. If it also works away from those images and is listenable, then that is a bonus. ? Music from the Movies
