There are some artists who have a good technique and understanding, but are endowed with limited original inspiration. Such artists then occasionally come up with one or two excellent original works: this is what separates them from the truly great artists who create numerous works to form a substantial oeuvre.



Rheinberger is one of these "little" artists, and his Nonet is undoubtedly his masterpiece. He was truly inspired, and with his knowledge of technique, created at one hammer-blow (as it were) a gorgeous jewel.



Rheinberger's Nonet compares favourably with Schubert's Octet, Beethoven's Septet, and Brahms' Nonet [First Serenade]. It's wonderfully scored, has excellent original melodies, and the overall technique is outstanding.

"Increcible as it seems, in his day some considered Spohr superior to Beethoven. Many,on the other hand, considered Spohr chief among second tier composers. I disagree with this also. If not on top I at least rank RHEINBERGER above Spohr. The Nonet in E flat is a gem that displays all the talent that the Ensemble Wien-Berlin offers. Flawless performances. LACHNER's Nonet in F is a good introduction to this unjustly neglected composer. For more of him I recommend the few Orchestral Suites that are available on CD.
