"Nels Cline and Vinny Golia are the west coasts' defacto avant garde scene leaders. Here they perform, on record, for the first time ever as a duo. Although having played duets together since the late 70's, they have never before bothered to document this long standing collaboration. Until now.Nels Cline is best known as the pre-eminent experimental west coast guitarist. He has played with everyone from Thurston Moore and Mike Watt to Gregg Bendian, not to mention in his own fantastic trios. Multi-reedist Vinny Golia runs the Nine Winds label and performs and records often in every conceivable context from duo to full big band.In the studio together these two hold back more than they let loose. There are fireworks to be found however, as Nels lets his guitar loop and feedback to atmospheric effect on a number of tracks, while Golia switches from flute to soprano to bass clarinet and back again. This is a document of subtlety and intense dialog however and not for those expecting straight ahead tunes. For the open minded listener this duo provides a welcome respite from the ordinary."
