Synopsis

Album Description
* Though preceded by four trio releases, the years 2007-2008 marked Eri Yamamoto's rise into the consciousness of astute music listeners outside of NYC. Her essential appearance on William Parker's eternal Corn Meal Dance was followed by a pair of her own luminous and widely acclaimed albums, Duologue and Redwoods (all on AUM Fidelity). * This new studio album of compositions/songs are, as part of her recent three-album string, nigh unmatched by her pianistic (or otherwise) peers in music. A handful of these songs could be new jazz standards, or covered by the more gifted in the rock realm, and all are brought to life with ebullience and deep sensitivity by her long-running trio partners, bassist David Ambrosio and drummer Ikuo Takeuchi. * Half of these songs were composed as a new "internal" soundtrack suite to the 1932 B&W silent film I Was Born, But... by Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu, one of the most important filmmakers in cinema history. While Ozu's film is serious and sometimes heartbreaking, it also has lightness and humor; Yamamoto's compositions accentuate this emotional complexity. The other half of the songs, equally compelling and far-ranging in mood, were composed through capturing Yamamoto's experiences living in NYC and her touring around the world.

CD Reviews

Something Good
John C. Graham | toronto, ontario Canada | 03/02/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Eri Yamamoto Trio follows in the tradition of the earlier Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans Trios. The music on this disc is alternately ruminative and brooding to joyous and celebratory, beautifully lyrical and painfully sensitive.

Eri Yamamoto has defined herself as a caring and thoughtful performer, someone to closely listen to. This beautifully recorded studio session is evidence enough that she is on the right track and at the top of her game. With Dave Ambrosio on bass and Ikuo Takeuchi playing drums, they've cast themselves as worthy decendants in the piano trio lineage.

Of the ten tunes included, half of them come from the experiences of living in New York City, the remainder were written for a black and white silent film from 1932 entitled 'I was born, but...' directed by Yasujiro Ozu. Recommended to anyone who enjoys the pleasures of fine piano trios. This one will put a smile on your face!"
