More of beautiful

"The surprise sleeper hit of the year (or so it should be), pianist Eri Yamamoto, bassist David Ambrosio and drummer Ikuo Takeuchi hit a homerun (my first sports analogy in a music review) with Redwoods.
Previously I only knew Eri's playing from the fantastic Corn Meal Dance (an all-time favorite of mine that I should have given 5 stars), but here she shows herself to be a beautiful composer as well as player. I don't know how this will be taken, but she strikes me as being somewhere between Aaron Copland and Keith Jarrett (though less busy than KJ) yet still never sounds anything like Bruce Hornsby. Rustic and sophisticated.
The 2nd time I heard Wonderland I hummed the melody as she was playing it. Just one listen had already cemented it in my mind. Here the band moves and morphs together as one, though never gets so "out" or abstract as to scare off the mainstream jazz fan.
Though ostensibly a piano trio, Bumpy Trail could be heard as the bass and drums being the natural world from which Cezanne (Eri) smears and personalizes his (her) view of nature.
With David Ambrosio and Ikuo Takeuchi being new to me, I bought the album with curiosity and high hopes. It blew the top right out of my hopes. This, The Beautiful and One Night at Miro Foundation are my favorite piano trio albums in recent memory."
