"Ernie Watts with the help of Mulgrew Miller on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums create a disc that has as the title says, classic moods. This CD is helped by the JVC XRCD sound which gets you deeper into the groups feelings. The covers of In A Sentimental Mood and On Green Dolphin Street open the CD with superb interplay between the musicians. Three originals, The Poet,I Don't Know Why and Blues Now and Then are welcome introductions to the world of Jazz. This is an audiophile must with superb craftsmanship from musicians to the final production. Lush Life and 'Round Midnight are also played with the rhythm section doing a wonderful job of framing the sound of Watts'sax. This is a CD to enjoy for both the music and for the way JVC has made the music sound."

"Having been really disappointed by a few of Ernie Watts's earlier JVC releases, I was not prepared to like this one, but after the first few bars of the first cut, "In a Sentimental Mood," I was hooked. Great sound, great music--Watts has laid down a really nice session of standards with support from Mulgrew Miller on piano, George Mraz on bass, and veteran drummer Jimmy Cobb. This session features a few originals, all by Watts, but the bulk of the cuts are standards--or maybe I should say, "classics." The recording quality is superb. Watts plays things a little straighter than, say, Bennie Wallace, and his tone on the tenor is not so breathy, but plenty of feeling still comes through. This is one of those CDs you may well find yourself playing over and over again, especially if you are a tenor lover--and I don't mean Domingo..."
