CD Reviews

The first of eight volumes of the complete Erskine Hawkins
John L Frigo | Shaker Heights, OH, USA | 10/23/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've been a fan of big band music since I can remember, but on a recent Bruce Oscar "Swing Shift" program on WDCB FM radio broadcast from Glen Ellyn, Illinois; one of the bands featured was Erskine Hawkins. Every performance played was a great one, with tight, clean ensemble work, great tasteful trumpet playing by Mr. Hawkins, and some great vocals as well. So I decided to investigate the band's catalog.

There is one CD compilation of the Hawkins band that is a must. It's called "The Original Tuxedo Junction." on RCA. I have reviewed it elsewhere. The French Classics label, on the other hand, has released over seven hundred CD's of jazz music since about 1992. Recently, however, a bankruptcy of the French distributor, Melodie, has put the pressing and distribution of these CD's on hold. This Erskine Hawkins release is one of the discs that is now out of print. It took me a long time to find a used copy, but the wait was worth it!

These early records on Vocalion do not have the technical quality of the later Victor issues, but the music is still great. I like "Until The Real Thing Comes Along", "Swinging In Harlem", Big John's Special", "A Swingy Little Rhythm", and "Dear Old Southland" which sounds like a gently swinging version of "Deep River." All of these performances are made from existing 78 rpm records, so there is surface noise to some extent. The music is what is important, and this band is GOOD! I'm still waiting for my copy of the last Hawkins volume to arrive from Amazon, but I have the other seven, and I must say Mr. Hawkins had a high standard of quality for his band. No wonder his band was the house band for the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem for so many years! His band swung with the best of them.

A new distributor in France, Night And Day, has taken over the distribution of the new French Classics label releases from catalog number 1390, "Gene Krupa 1952-1953." A good source for these CD's is World's Records in Novato, California, but Amazon and eBay are good places to look for used copies of out of print jazz CD's also."
