Synopsis

Album Description
With contemporary and traditional settings of mantras (spiritual chants) which have, since ancient times, been used to aid and enhance meditation, these 3CDs focus on two of the world's most important meditative traditions: the Buddhist and the Hindu. CD1: These mantras originate from within a Chinese tradition as practised today and, on The Greatest Six-Word Brilliant Dharani, feature one of the most important mantras: 'Om-Ma-Ni-Bay-May-Hon'. This is found in many variants throughout the Buddhist world and is typically translated as `The Jewel In The Lotus'. CD2: The Indian Hindu tradition of meditation is represented here by world-famous singer Jagjit Singh who, after the tragic death of his child, broadened his repertoire from the love-poetry (ghazals) that had made him famous, to feature a more meditative and contemplative music. In Shree Krishna Naam Dhun it includes one of the most famous mantras ever "Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare". CD3: On the Hindu island of Bali, in Indonesia, meditation is part of the daily fabric of life and the repetitive patterns played by the gamelan - orchestras of gongs, xylophones and other instruments, that are typical of the region - are often used as an aid to meditation, whether initially designed for that purpose or not. Here we include one of Bali's most beautiful orchestras, a type thought to have been played in the inner courtyard of the palace while the king and queen were asleep.
