Compulsively listenable

"My brother passed on this old CD to me and now I can't stop listening to it. It almost never leaves my 3-change CD player tray.Solid pop songwriting, occasionally inflected with jazz or country. Nice piano parts (reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby at times), good hooks, good use of saxophone, and expressive vocals by lead singer Boo Hewerdine.Standout tracks include the catchy Skeleton Crew, the expansive Skywriting, the jazzy Up In Smoke, the power-pop tour-de-force Crystal Palace. The best track of all may be Tiny Lights, with a compelling hook that isn't easy to break down melodically but sticks in your mind anyway. But there isn't really a bad track on here. November Brides, Cigarette Girls, Honey Be Good, The Wishing Game, Blue Shoes Stepping -- it's all quite strong.Hard to find, but worth picking up if you do."
Classy

"Another greatly underrated band that most people never heard of, same old story.
England's The Bible were a class act fronted by the talented Boo Hewerdine. The sound is jazz/pop complemented by great musicians like Neill MacColl, half brother of the late Kirsty MacColl.
"Skywriting" is a great mix of breezy vocals, piano and guitars. "Crystal Palace" is still one of my all time favorite songs. The vocals are superb and the group is clicking on every cylinder. Other great tracks include "Honey Be Good", the jazzy "November Brides" and "Blue Shoes Stepping".
I'm not sure if the US release included them so hold out for the UK release with the extra tracks. "White Feathers" is great.
A real classic in my opinion.
"Random Acts of Kindness" a mini compilation on the Haven label is well worth searching for as well.

An ethereal joy

"The songs are emotive and smart, the arrangements are simple enough to show off the heart-felt vocals but rich enough to hit all the right buttons, and each song is its own separate journey. All five stars are easily justified.
